Natural Materials

We only use those natural materials that we consider to be of the highest quality. Sustainably produced and ethically sourced, so that they can later have a new life. A product that comes from nature always wants to return to nature, and that is how it should be.

HORSE MANE

The base of Hästens beds is that humble material that we love so much: horsehair. A material that has some of the most wonderful properties.

INCORPORATED VENTILATION SYSTEM

Few materials can match horsehair when it comes to building a bed. Each of the coiled strands of horsehair acts like a small spring, which reinforces the work of our internal spring systems, providing support and flexibility. Horsehair also incorporates an extremely effective ventilation system.

Each strand of horsehair acts as a miniature air conduit: a hollow tube with microscopic capillary action that channels moisture and allows fresh air to enter. It is so effective that if the horsehair is soaked in water and shaken a little, it dries almost instantly. The millions of comfortable natural micro-springs that make up Hästens beds draw away any potential excess heat and moisture from your body during sleep. The result is that you will fall asleep faster and enjoy a deep, uninterrupted, and rejuvenating sleep at the perfect temperature. Imagine how this contributes to the quality of your sleep.

TOTALLY FREE FROM ALLERGENS

The horsehair we use in our beds has been tested by various independent research organisations in Europe. All of them have determined that it is completely free of allergens, which means it does not cause allergies. It is also worth noting that horsehair is an organic material with antibacterial, fungicidal, and acaricidal properties that contribute to a healthy and hygienic sleeping environment.

FILLING MATERIAL SINCE THE 19TH CENTURY

We use authentic horse tail hair in our beds to take advantage of its prized properties and offer a purely natural and extremely durable product. First, the hair is washed in boiling water, and then it is thoroughly rinsed before being centrifuged and disinfected. It is heated to a temperature of 140 °C at an atmospheric pressure four times higher, with a high degree of humidity.

The entire process is completed without any additives. The result is a completely clean and fluffy natural material. The processed horsehair is stored before being separated for use in a Hästens bed or mattress. As the long strands are untangled, the horsehair takes on a beautiful wave and a volume much greater than it had previously. This process has undergone very few variations over the course of two centuries.

OUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF HORSE HAIR

The extreme care we take in selecting and classifying horsehair is the foundation of the high and consistent quality of all our products. Hästens uses different types of horsehair with various properties:

Crin A-Lyx: a pure and specially selected horsehair that uses the longest and strongest strands to make it a little more elastic, resulting in a bed that is softer but also firmer.

Crin J: a soft, plush, and flexible blend of high-quality horsehair and cow tail, which creates a softer and more flexible bed.

Cotton allows the whole body to breathe easily; it is the perfect complement for the mane. Soft, durable, and pleasant.

COTTON

Cotton is perhaps the softest and most comfortable gift that nature has given to man. By providing wonderful comfort and breathability, Hästens' soft cotton allows air to circulate around your body, keeping you dry and comfortable in a healthy sleep environment. These advantages will help you fall asleep more quickly and enjoy a deeper sleep for longer.

A COOLER SLEEP THANKS TO SWEATING

Humans do not only breathe through the lungs, but also through the skin. Each of us has more than seven million pores that breathe and eliminate toxins from the body. To stay dry and comfortable, it is important to sleep on a bed that breathes and allows air to circulate around the body.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COTTON AND A NON-POROUS MATERIAL

You may have noticed how cool and dry it feels in summer when you wear a cotton shirt or blouse instead of a garment made from synthetic materials. This is due to the ability of cotton to ventilate and absorb perspiration and moisture to a high degree. Your night-time perspiration is 98% water, which evaporates very easily when you sleep on a breathable mattress and use breathable bed linen.

The use of non-porous synthetic materials such as rubber, polyether, or other synthetic materials offers little ventilation. A non-porous material will retain moisture, meaning that much of what the body eliminates through perspiration remains in the bed. And in a warm and humid environment, bed mites multiply rapidly.

Wool is warm when it's cold and cool when the heat is on. Wool is not only nature's favourite material, but it is also incredibly fire-resistant.

WOOL

Nature has created another little miracle, a perfect ally of horsehair and cotton, an exceptionally performing material: wool. Pure wool helps to ensure a good temperature in the bed; in a way, it acts as a climate regulator for your bed. The ability of wool to warm when it is cold and to cool when it is hot has been well known since ancient times. Wool will keep you cool and allow you to sleep at the ideal temperature.

THE PERFECT RECIPE

The Hästens beds contain a precisely calculated blend of wool and cotton to provide ultimate comfort while also imparting natural fire-resistant properties to our beds. Wool is one of the most fire-resistant fibres available. Additionally, it has anti-static properties and is strong, elastic, water-resistant, and insulating against heat.

OPTIMISED THROUGH EVOLUTION

The wool fibre has a complex structure similar to a spring base and a textured surface, optimised through evolution to provide thermal protection. This unique cellular structure is very different from that of a soft synthetic fibre.

The structure of wool fibre allows a large volume of air to circulate between the fibres, providing natural insulation properties as well as flexibility, elasticity, and resilience. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water without feeling damp. Its small pores allow water to pass through the cotton fibre, providing a comfortable material both in the warm summer and on cool winter nights. Sleep soundly at any time of the year.

LASTING ADVANTAGES

The history of wool dates back thousands of years. The Babylonians and the Egyptians were already weaving with wool. The oldest example of woven Swedish wool dates from the Bronze Age, which means we are talking about around 3000 years ago. But wool was not only used to produce thread for clothing; it was also used as bedding filling. The ability of wool to keep you warm and protect you both at night and during the day remains the same today. By using wool, cotton, and horsehair as filling materials in very precise combinations, our beds acquire temperature-regulating properties and an unmatched natural elasticity.

"Discreet but effective" could be a good description of linen. A very humble material whose numerous health benefits help us enjoy a restorative sleep.

LINEN

Thanks to linen, our lives have been more comfortable since time immemorial. Not only is it incredibly durable and flexible, but it also diverts static electricity. According to various studies, static electricity can cause headaches, dryness in the mucous membranes, and itching of the skin. A human body with an electrical overload can also attract unwanted particles from its environment, which can cause or exacerbate allergies.

By using linen in the exact measure for the successive layers of the bed, static electricity from the body is eliminated and a more positive energy is generated during sleep.

And not only that: linen is an excellent absorber of noise and vibrations, which contributes to a night’s sleep that regenerates the body, providing peace and comfort.

PINE

Our great foundation. The slow-growing Swedish pine that we find in a Hästens is, in a word, solid. We owe the strength and stability of Hästens to it, synonymous with quality and safety.

The wooden bed frame from Hästens provides your bed with considerable strength and stability. Our frames are made from carefully selected pine trees from the forests of northern Sweden, where they grow at a slower rate and, as a result, become stronger. Quality and environmental responsibility are two issues of great importance to us.

Our passion for nature also takes into account how each pine tree grows and the regeneration of the forest. All the wooden bed frames and headboards from Hästens have the FSC certification, which means that their origin can be traced and that they come from pine harvested in a way that preserves the biodiversity, productivity, and ecological processes of the forest. All our bed frames include a 25-year warranty.

SPRINGS

They relieve pressure and provide support. But it is not easy to guess, as you will never hear or feel a Hästens spring while performing the task of aligning your body in a harmonious posture.

The springs are a science in themselves and are very important components of the bed. Ours are of the highest quality and are manufactured exclusively in Sweden. All Hästens beds contain two or more spring systems that work together: soft and flexible springs to provide surface softness, and firmer springs underneath to offer deep support. With these spring systems working in harmony, the bed adapts to your body to give you the support and relaxation you need. All the springs in our beds come with a 25-year warranty.

THE SIZE OF THE SPRINGS IS NOT EVERYTHING

The quality of a spring system is not determined by the number of springs, but by the different types of springs used, how they are positioned, and how they combine with layers of natural materials. What determines the quality and properties of the spring system is the combination of its size, the height of the spring, and the number of coils. It is a technology that is as precise as it is surprising. For example, the greater the number of coils, the higher the quality of the mattress and its durability. However, an excess of coils can affect the compression of the spring. The balance between these variables is crucial when designing spring systems to achieve an optimal result. Each and every one of our spring systems has been precisely calculated to provide the desired pressure relief and the necessary support to ensure an optimal sleeping experience.

POCKET SPRING SYSTEM

Our pocket springs act independently and uniquely. When weight rests on a single spring, the adjacent springs barely feel its presence. Each spring moves individually based on even the slightest movement of your body, so you will hardly notice when your partner moves in bed. Thanks to the special heat treatment that the steel undergoes, the metal structure of the springs reorganises, always maintaining its exact shape and elasticity, returning to its original position after compression. Each spring is placed in a small breathable 'sack' that allows air to circulate throughout the mattress, providing a healthy sleeping environment..

BONNELL SPRING SYSTEM

This system of lower coils helps to absorb the most intense levels of tension and contributes to the depth of the spring and its base action, providing support to your body and alleviating your posture.
